Legal Requirements for Private Health Visitors

Health Visitors are governed by several legalities before they are permitted to work officially in the United Kingdom.

Under the NMC - Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Legal Requirements for Private Health Visitors

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the governing body to which all practicing nurses and midwives are accountable. In order to maintain registration nurses and midwives must adhere to a strict code of conduct and demonstrate competency, knowledge and skills through a portfolio of continuing professional development. It is vital that your Private Health Visitor is able to demonstrate to you the relevant parts of the register which they are on.

Self-employed registered nurses and midwives must hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) offers members opportunity for professional development, advocacy and support, and provides professional indemnity and public liability insurance for registered nurses wishing to practice on a self employed basis. It is a good idea to be a full member of the RCN or any other union as they do give their members good support if they want to work in private practice.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

The CRB is an Executive Agency of the Home Office set-up to help organisations make safer recruitment decisions. It runs police checks to ensure that any individual wanting to work with vulnerable members of society, such as children, does not pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of that person or group. It is vital that all those members wanting to set up in private practice hold a valid CRB certificate and show this to prospective parents who are thinking of engaging the services of a Private Health Visitor. Parents should ask to see a copy of this when they first engage a Private Health Visitor.
